British GT – Snetterton victory in GT4

On their debut in the GT4 class of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship, George, and co-driver Lee Mowle, took the victory spoils in Race 1 at Snetterton in the Optimum Motorsport Ginetta G50. Race 2 was going much the same way, as George built up a 27 secs. lead in the first half hour, setting the fastest lap of the race on the way. However, an oil leak unfortunately caused the retirement of the car just after the driver change pitstop.

With the G55 GT3 car out of action for this event, George had switched to the GT4 class for the Snetterton encounter. The weather played its part in how the grid was decided – two severe rain storms which flooded parts of the circuit meant second free practice was abandoned part way through and qualifying had to be cancelled. So, the grid for Sundays two races was determined on the times from the practice sessions and the Optimum car wound up in 2nd and 4th spots.

Lee took the start for race 1 and settled into third place. A quick spin at Palmers on lap 9 put the car into 4th place and lost a little time. However, with mechanical issues delaying two of the cars ahead, George was in second place a few laps after the pit stop and was able to claw the deficit back to the leading Century Motorsport car, taking the lead on lap 20 of 28, and bringing the car across the line to win.

Race 2 saw George leading as lap 1 was completed and he set off to build a gap prior to the pit stop on the half hour. Setting several fastest laps during the stint, an ominous trail of smoke from the rear of the car was developing. George pitted on lap 15 for the driver change and the team checked the problem. An oil leak from the differential was detected, and although Lee re-joined the race, the car was retired a few laps later as the situation worsened.

TV highlights of the race can be seen on Channel 4 on 18 Aug. at 07.00 and on Motors TV, also on 18 Aug. at 17.52.

The British GT Championship is next at Silverstone Grand Prix circuit or the 3 hour Tourist Trophy event on 09 September.
