British GT – Into Top 5 at Brands Hatch
George and co-driver Luke Hines finished round 6 of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in an excellent 5th position, to deliver the best British GT result to date for the Ginetta GT3 car since its launch at the start of the season.
Qualifying was hotly contested and George delivered a superb lap to take P6 on the grid with a time of 1.26.234, only 3/10th off the pole time. The competitiveness at the sharp end of the British GT grid was demonstrated with the top 13 cars covered by three quarters of a second, and the Optimum Motorsport car positioned firmly in the mix.
Luke took the start for the two hour race. A rain shower as the cars were about to leave the grid soaked the track, but not enough to warrant wet tyres, so conditions were tricky in the early stages. Luke worked his way through to P2 as the track dried, however, the advantage gained over the following pack during this first stint (to overcome the pitstop driver equalisation penalty) was lost as two safety car interventions brought everyone back together.
Consequently, George re-joined the race on lap 35 in P5, following the pitstop, and enjoyed an intense battle over the remaining hour for P4 with the Trackspeed Porsche 911R of Nicolas Armindo and Ferrari 458 Italia of Arron Scott, ultimately holding position for the final run to the chequered flag.
TV highlights of this race can be seen on Channel 4 – Sat. 7th July at 07.00 and on-line on 4OD, and on MotorsTV (UK) on the same day at 17.21.
The next installment of British GT racing takes place at Snetterton on 05 August with two races of one hour duration.
